Are you looking to check what motherboard do you have and you’re not sure how to do it? There are many reasons why you might want to know what motherboard you have. Maybe you’re looking to upgrade your computer and need to know which parts are compatible with your motherboard. Or maybe you’re troubleshooting a problem and need to know if your motherboard is the cause.
In any case, checking what motherboard you have is actually very easy, and there are a few different ways you can do it. In this article, I’ll show you how to check your motherboard in Windows and Linux.
But before we get started, let me give you a quick explanation of what a motherboard is and why it’s important. A motherboard is the main printed circuit board (PCB) in a computer. It’s responsible for connecting all the different components in your computer, including the CPU, RAM, storage drives, and graphics card.
The motherboard is one of the most important parts of your computer, so it’s important to know which one you have.
So, without further ado, let’s get started…
Why Should You Check Your Motherboard Model?
As I mentioned before, there are several reasons why you might want to check the model of your motherboard. As an example, if you were making an upgrade to your computer, it would be important for you to know which parts are compatible with your motherboard.
Or, if you’re troubleshooting a problem, it’s important to rule out the possibility that your motherboard is the cause. In either case, checking your motherboard model is a relatively simple process.
Here are a few cases where checking your motherboard model can be helpful:
- To find out if your motherboard is compatible with a certain component. For example, if you’re looking to upgrade your CPU or graphics card, you need to make sure that your motherboard is compatible with the new component.
- To find out if your motherboard is the cause of a certain problem. For example, if your computer is crashing or if it’s not booting up, checking the motherboard model might help you troubleshoot the problem.
- To find the right drivers for your motherboard. For example, if you’re having problems with the sound or network on your computer, you might need to install the latest drivers for your motherboard.
Now that you know why you should check your motherboard model, let’s take a look at how to do it…
How to Check What Motherboard Do I Have?
There are many ways to check what motherboard you’re using on your system and most of them are very easy to do – but in this section, I will show you four different methods that you can use to figure out what motherboard is running on your system.
They are as follows:
- Using the “System Information” Page
- Using Command Prompt or PowerShell
- Using Third-Party software
- By opening up your computer
So, let’s take a look at each method in more detail…
Checking Motherboard Details from System Information
To check what motherboard you have in Windows, simply open up the System Information tool. This will provide you with all the information you need to know about your system, including the motherboard model.
Here’s how to do it:
To get started, you’ll need to open your “Start Menu“. You can do this by clicking on the “Start” button in the bottom-left corner of your screen. Alternatively, you can press the “Windows key” on your keyboard.
When you have opened the Start Menu, simply type “System Information” into the search bar and press the “Enter” key.
This will open up the System Information tool.
Once you have the System Information window open, take a look at the “System Summary” section at the top-right corner. Under this section, you should see an item called “BaseBoard Manufacturer“, “BaseBoard Product“, and “BaseBoard Version“.
These are the pieces of information that you need.
These are the three things that you need to know in order to identify your motherboard. In my case, I’m using my old ASUS laptop. The three things that I see are “ASUSTeK COMPUTER INC.”, “X507UAR“, and “1.0“.
From this information, we can conclude that my motherboard is made by ASUS, its model number is X507UAR, and the version is 1.0. These three pieces of information will be different for you, but they will tell you everything you need to know about your motherboard.
So, this is one way to find out what motherboard you have. Let’s take a look at another method…
Checking Motherboard Details from CMD or PowerShell
If you’re feeling a little more adventurous, you can also use the Command Prompt or PowerShell to check what motherboard you have on your system. This method is a bit more advanced, but it’s still pretty easy to do.
Here’s how to do it:
To get started, you’ll need to open the “Command Prompt“. You can do this by clicking on the “Start” button in the bottom-left corner of your screen. Alternatively, you can press the “Windows + R” keys on your keyboard.
Once the “Run” dialog box appears, simply type in “cmd” and hit “Enter”. This will open up the Command Prompt. Once you have the Command Prompt opens, simply type the following command and press the “Enter” key:
wmic baseboard get manufacturer, model, version, product
This command will give you the same information that we got in the previous method. In my case, I see “ASUSTeK COMPUTER INC.“, “X507UAR“, and “1.0“.
Both methods are perfectly valid, and it’s really up to your personal preference which one you want to use for checking your computer specs. If you’re more comfortable using the terminal, then go ahead and use that method.
Checking Motherboard Details Using Third-Party Tools
If you don’t want to use the Command Prompt or PowerShell, there are also a few third-party softwares that can help you check what motherboard you have.
Although, there are many different softwares that you can use for this, but we’re going to recommend two of the best.
- The first one is called “Speccy“, and it’s made by Piriform. Speccy is a very popular system information tool, and it’s really easy to use.
- The second one is called “AIDA64“, and it’s made by FinalWire. AIDA64 is a bit more advanced than Speccy, but it’s still pretty easy to use.
Both of these softwares will give you all the information you need to know about your motherboard, as well as other important information about your system, such as your CPU, GPU, RAM, and more.
This way, you can get a complete picture of your computer’s health and performance.
Here’s a quick overview of how to use these softwares;
To get started, you’ll need to download and install Speccy from their official website. You can do this by going to the Piriform website and downloading the latest version.
Once you have downloaded and installed Speccy, simply launch the program and take a look at the “Motherboard” section. All the information you need will be right there.
In AIDA64, the process is pretty much the same.
First, you’ll need to download and install the software from their official https://www.aida64.com/downloads/ website.
Once you have installed AIDA64, launch the program and navigate to the “Motherboards” section. All the information you need will be right there.
Both Speccy and AIDA64 are very popular system information tools, and they’re both great for checking what motherboard you have.
Opening Computer Case to Check Motherboard Model
Lastly, if you want to be 100% sure about what motherboard you have, you can always open up your computer case and take a look. This method is a bit more complicated than the other methods, but it’s still pretty easy to do.
You just need to be careful not to touch any of the components inside the case.
To do so, you need to power off your computer and unplug it from the power outlet. Once you have done that, open up the case and take a look at the motherboard.
In most cases, you will see the model number of the motherboard printed on it. If you can’t find the model number, you can also try looking for a sticker with the manufacturer’s name.
Once you have found the model number, you can then search for it online to find out more about your motherboard.
This is the best way to be 100% sure about what motherboard you have. However, it’s also the most complicated method. So, if you’re not comfortable opening up your computer case, we recommend using one of the other methods.
Find Out What Motherboard You Have On Linux
If you’re using Linux, then finding the motherboard is relatively easy. You just have to open your terminal by using the “CTRL + T” command and login as a root.
Once you’re logged in, simply type in the following command: “dmidecode -t baseboard“. This will give you all of the information that you need about your motherboard without having to open up your computer.
And that’s it!
You have now successfully found your motherboard information without having to open up your computer case.
Wrapping Up!
Finding out what motherboard you have is pretty easy, and there are a few different ways you can do it.
If you’re comfortable using the Command Prompt or PowerShell, then we recommend using one of those methods. And if you want more information about your system, we recommend using third-party softwares like Speccy or AIDA64.
Lastly, if you want to be 100% sure about what motherboard you have, you can always open up your computer case and take a look.
